Rosenblatt Recitals

Dear subscriber,

We spoke to English tenor Ben Johnson ahead of his Rosenblatt Recital next week with James Baillieu. Ben, winner of the Cardiff Singer of the world's Audience Prize, shared with us some advice for young singers as well as personal highlights from his career so far.

In conversation with... Ben Johnson

Your relationship with the Rosenblatt recitals goes back to 2011, when you performed a recital at St John’s, Smith Square; how do you think you have changed as an artist since then?

Have you always wanted to be a singer? If not, then what, and who, was it that prompted your desire?

If you could give one piece of advice to your 12 year old self in the Chingford Parish Church Choir what would it be?

You won the audience prize at the 2013 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World; was that the most nerve-wracking performance you’ve ever done?

You’ve performed at Wigmore Hall before; what is it about the Hall that is different to other major venues and makes you want to return?

You’ve sung with some of the most famous companies in the world, including the ENO and Glyndebourne and even in the BBC Proms, but who is the musician you have enjoyed working with the most and why?

The professional partnership with your accompanist, James Baillieu, goes back a number of years; what is it about James that allows you to work so well together?

Finally, you’ve chosen some fantastic song repertoire for this recital; please talk us through how you came to decide on these composers’ works.

Ben Johnson's Rosenblatt Recital takes place next Wednesday 8 April at 7.30pm at London's Wigmore Hall. To hear more ahead of the recital, check out these videos on our YouTube channel from Ben's first Rosenblatt Recital, in 2011 with Japanese soprano Eri Nakamura.
