'Welsh tenor Dennis O’Neill can truly be called one of the operatic all-time greats.’
Dominic McHugh – Music OMH

A legendary exponent of Verdi, an eminent pedagogue, recording artist and TV personality, Dennis O’Neill’s prolific career has spanned four decades, featuring performances in all of the world’s leading opera houses, including over 200 appearances with the Royal Opera House alone. Awarded a CBE for his services to Opera in the 2000 New Year’s Honours list, O’Neill’s brilliant reputation is built upon a life-long association with the roles of Giuseppe Verdi: he has sung twenty-one of his roles to date and was awarded the Verdi Medal by the Amici di Verdi in recognition of his work in 2005.

Transferring his success to television, Dennis became a household name to a much wider audience, hosting two enormously popular TV shows in the 1980s - Dennis O'Neill (1987) and Dennis O'Neill and Friends (1989) - with the album accompanying the original series topping the classical music charts for a then-record number of weeks. More recently, O’Neill’s passion for nurturing the next generation of opera singers has seen him give masterclasses throughout the world, feature on judging panels of numerous internationally renowned singing competitions and found the Wales International Academy of Voice in 2006, with famous alumni including award-winning Russian soprano Julia Lezhneva.

In the video below from 2010, O’Neill performs the beautiful Welsh song 'Arafa, Don!' by R.S. Hughes. Browse his Rosenblatt Recital programme on our website here.
