‘Carmen Giannattasio – surely destined to be one of the great divas of her generation’
Sunday Herald

Possessing a dark, rich, full lyric soprano voice, Carmen Giannattasio has been the toast of the London opera scene all summer following her superb, fiery and virtuosic performances in Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda at the Royal Opera House. Starring as Elizabeth I opposite a Mary Stuart played by the greatest mezzo of our time - Joyce DiDonato - Giannattasio was hailed for her part in an electrifying battle royale which left audiences and critics alike gushing and has set a truly daunting benchmark for any future soprano to follow.

‘Blessed with a larger than life star quality... she can flip from vibrant light coloratura to dark smouldering mezzo tones with an elegant, clean technique and powerfully intense phrasing’
Opera Now

Carmen boasts a hugely impressive CV. An alumnus of La Scala’s famed Accademia di Perfezionamento in Milan, Giannattasio took 1st prize and the Audience prize in the 2002 Operalia competition the year after graduating. Performances in leading European opera houses followed, with her first appearance on British shores (Elena, La donna del lago, Edinburgh 2006) prompting the Financial Times to proclaim ‘behold, a prima donna is born’! A productive partnership with Opera Rara yielded five well-received recordings of rare/forgotten operas and a Gramophone Award in 2011 for Rossini’s Ermione, in which Carmen performed the titular role. Carmen then firmly established herself as one of today’s leading sopranos with successful debuts at the Metropolitan Opera (Leonora, Il trovatore) and the Royal Opera House (Mimi, La bohème - video below) in 2012:

Not only a brilliant singer, Carmen is also a true fashionista with an impeccable sense of style, meaning some haute couture surprises are guaranteed for Monday evening! Both her eye for fashion and beautiful voice are on display in the following video clip, where Giannattasio performs ‘Vissi d’arte’ from Puccini’s Tosca in the 2014 New Year’s concert at La Fenice:
