‘Dimitri Platanias offers an awe-inspiring baritone’
The Guardian

Formerly a classical guitarist, powerful Greek baritone Dimitri Platanias was awarded the Alexandra Trianti Scholarship to study in Italy in 2000, his performance in the showcase concert leading Opera Magazine to single him out as ‘a name to watch out for in the current dearth of Verdi baritones.

After building his reputation throughout Europe, Platanias burst onto the UK scene in 2012 with a stunning Royal Opera House debut in the title role of Verdi’s Rigoletto. Receiving a slate of four star reviews, Platanias was lauded for his ‘gloriously sustained tone and line… thrilling power… [and] bags of character’ (The Times). He was immediately invited back for the role of Paolo in Simon Boccanegra the following summer, and is lined up for several future performances at Covent Garden including reprising the title role of Rigoletto this autumn.

Platanias’ most recent UK performance was greeted with even greater plaudits: opening the London Symphony Orchestra’s 13/14 home-season as Rigoletto in an electrifying concert performance at the Barbican, The Sunday Times labelled him ‘the great white hope among younger Verdi baritones.’ Click on the links below to hear why, as Platanias performs arias from Rigoletto, Andrea Chenier and Nabucco.

Nemico della Patria (Andrea Chenier)
