» Wigmore Hall
» TICKETS £12, £16, £22, £26

Angel Blue’s back-story is a fascinating one. Youngest of four daughters to the late, great gospel singer Sylvester Blue, Angel wanted to be an opera singer from as young as nine years old. Needing to fund her own way through music studies at UCLA, Angel’s mother encouraged her to enter beauty pageants – which she did with great success, winning titles including Miss Hollywood and Miss Southern California! In the fledgling stages of her career she was then hand-picked by the legendary Plácido Domingo for his Young Artists programme at Los Angeles Opera, leading to regular opportunities to perform alongside the great tenor himself.

Possessing a beautifully rich, velvety voice, previous reviews suggest we are in for a real treat from this upcoming star. Proving an instant hit on her operatic debut as Clara in San Francisco Opera’s Porgy and Bess, the Los Angeles Times praised her ‘killer high notes and killer theatrical instincts!’, with her beautiful rendition of ‘Summertime’ – which we can look forward to hearing first-hand – since being labelled ‘a lyric triumph’ (Boston Classical Review).

Angel made an equally memorable ‘knockout debut’ (Metro) in the UK earlier this year, lighting up English National Opera’s production of La bohème in the role of Musetta. Numerous 4 & 5 star reviews picked Angel out for a ‘show-stealing performance’, labelling her ‘a revelation… [and] an artist to watch’.

‘American soprano Angel Blue is outstanding as Musetta, glamorous, commanding, and with a gleaming, lyric soprano that fills the theatre’ ****
Financial Times

Angel’s programme features songs and arias by Strauss, Rachmaninov, Wagner, Verdi and more, including ‘Sempre libera’ from La traviata – here is a video of Angel singing this aria in recital in March 2011.
